Classroom Expectations
As in every school in the El Centro Elementary School district, students are expected to follow certain rules that will help to keep them safe and successful. Although most of our students are aware of our school rules regarding behavior, dress code, homework and academics, it is important for parents to remind students to follow all of the rules that will help them be successful this year. Behavior in class, effort, participation, attendance and responsibility in completing all assignments is essential for your child to be successful. Together we can make this year a great one for your child.
This year your child will be exposed to strategies that will expand and challenge their thinking skills as well as engage them in new learning experiences that are appropriate for their level of learning. Being in a GATE class does not necessarily mean more work. Students will have new challenges and unique experiences. Our class will incorporate lots of technology based learning this year since we are fortunate to have iPads to do projects and research. Mr. Reyes is not only a GATE certified teacher, he is also credentialed to teach educational technology. Students will be required to accomplish assignments, homework and projects online throughout this year. Because of this it is important that students have their own email address. Although it is not absolutely necessary, it will help them when they need to access or send work or assignments.
Book Lists
Accelerated Reading is important in our classroom. Reading independently helps students increase their vocabulary and comprehension skills. This leads students to become better writers and thinkers. Our classroom goal for this year a a minimum of 25 points per quarter. Below are some suggested lists to help you get started. You can pick any book, however I'd like it to be close to a level 5.0 book for starters. See Reading Lists tab. My expectation for GATE students is level 6.0 and above. You can also check for A.R. books at the A.R. book finder below.
Our students always need items to make their year better, but unfortunately our school does not provide some items. If you are able to donate the following items, just send them with your child to school. Our classroom really appreciates your donation.
1. Kleenex 2. Hand Sanitizer 3. Band Aides 4. Wipes 5. Dry Erase Markers (each student should have plenty) 6. Eraser for markers
