Students will be working on two lap books with icons. Students need to learn about the origins of Christmas and several Fairy tale characters and create a lap book for each. Students have been given instructions in written form as well as enough materials to begin. This project will be worked on during class, but can also be taken home and worked on as well. A lapbook is a book created by students that organizes information, facts and activities about a topic. Both lapbooks are due on Dec. 17.
Parents, this quarter we are learning about ecosystems in class during science time. As I have explained in my first letter home, I am integrating technology and creativity into many assignments. This gives students a way to learn and explore the curriculum in a different, non-traditional way. Last Friday I introduced a mini Project for students to work on to be due at the end of two weeks. Students may turn it in sooner if they want. All they have to do, is find an example of an ecosystem somewhere in our community and then using a video camera, iPod with a camera, iPad with a camera or phone with a camera, to take a 20 second video of the ecosystem. They need to send it to me through email. They can send it just as is or if they'd like to add music and a title if they have a way to do that. They must include a list of the biotic factors and abiotic factors of the ecosystem and email the list as well. Remind them that there are different places to find ecosystems like ponds, lakes and even the desert. If your child doesn't have a camera, they can borrow one from me. They just need to plan when they will need it and then ask me for it. Mini projects are due on or before Oct. 15. Ecosystem Mini Project Requirements: (5 pts.) passing
1. 20 Second Video of Any Ecosystem, i.e. pond, desert, garden, oasis, river or lake or related location. (3 pts.) 2. Students must include a list of at least 5 biotic and abiotic factors in that ecosystem. (1 pt.) 3. Submit a comment with an icon and statement to their own mini project. (1 pt.) Each year our students look forward to going on at least one or two great field trips. Last year our class was able to go to the San Diego Zoo Safari. This year the plan is to raise enough funds to take a field trip to the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. There are many museums in Balboa Park that we can take advantage of, but we need to have the funds. In the past my 6th grade classroom has been able to raise enough money for two major out of town field trips as well as small in county field trips like to the movies in December, tours to the IVC planetarium and swimming at the end of the year. In order to do this we need to raise the money. Each year our 6th grade class has a tri-tip dinner plate fundraiser. Each student is asked to participate and sell from 10 to 15 tickets. This year we plan to have our fundraiser early in the year in early October or November. I ask parents to please help as much as you can so we can be sure to have enough funds to provide some premier field trips for your children. If you are interested in helping with the try-tip dinner just leave me a message on the Contact Me page. Thanks Mr. Reyes |
